“Casa de Jorge Coalla Potts is where I rest my head when I’m in Havana. Jorge, Marisel, and their daughter Jessica are an absolute delight and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The home is one of the most beautiful and agreeable casa particulares in Havana. The mattress is firm and guarantees a comfortable night’s rest. And the setting is unbeatable.”

“I found a new home in the heart of Vedado, Havana’s middle-class business district. My apartment was to the rear of a ground-floor unit beautifully maintained by live-in owners Jorge Coalla Potts and his wife, Marisl. It was a good size size—about 15 square feet—with a cool tile floor underfoot and a lofty ceiling with a fan that stirred the hot air of the city in May. Black and jade tiles lined the cavernous bathroom… The L-shaped living room was airy and sparsely furnished with four silloners (rockers), an antique mahogany dining table, a taupe sofa by the door, and a profusion of potted plants that Jorge watered daily. Louvered windows ran the length of the side wall [and] were kept shuttered [to] filter out the harsh sunlight [and] keep the house cool. A larger window faced the street, and I took great pleasure in leaning on the windowsill or sitting in a rocker, sipping a demitasse of Marisel’s thick, sweet Cuban coffee—appropriately called an infusion on menus, for it has the kick of a cocaine injection—and staring out through the protective bars, watching pretty habaneras pass by.”

Vedado
“Vedado—the commercial heart of ‘modern’ Havana—has been described as ‘Havana at its middle-class best. The University of Havana is here. So are many of the city’s prime hotels and restaurants, virtually all its main commercial buildings, and block after block of handsome mansions and apartment houses in art deco, eclectic, Beaux-Arts, and neoclassical styles— luxurious and humble alike lining streets shaded by stately jagüeys dropping their aerial roots to the ground.” —Christopher P.
